Wind Power: Gust or another Renewable Energy?

Wind is one of nature’s most powerful natural forces whose wrath can devastate and cause havoc and has been both revered and feared throughout the ages. In its simplest terms, wind is basically the flow of air that has been heated by the sun. This heated air is then moved from areas of high pressure to areas which have low pressure. Wind energy therefore is a form of renewable solar energy.

History states that the wind has been attributed to many Gods, with most religions having their own variation. In Greek mythology it was Anemoi, Norse had Njord and in Ancient Rome, Venti. In some cultures, wind has been seen as a supernatural force and is even mentioned in the Bible with some winds having divine powers from God.

One thing to be remembered however is that for all its destructive nature, when harnessed correctly, can be a fantastic source of renewable energy. So, how can we harness wind power? Let’s see!

Wind power works by using a set of blades to turn a turbine in order to create electricity. These wind turbines are often found in large scale wind farms around the world which are connected to the electrical grid but are increasingly being found individually in remote locations and private homes.

In fact, wind power is one of the most economical forms of renewable energy on the market today making it a very good way to power our homes as well as our businesses. Modern wind turbines can even aid us financially with small home turbines lowering our electricity bills by anything from fifty to one hundred percent. They act by converting energy to produce hot water for heating and washing instead of producing electricity.

In many cases, funding is available from the government from schemes such as the Low Carbon Buildings Programme who supply grants for people using renewable energy. These grants can be used for many forms of renewable energy such as solar energy systems, and small scale hydro.

Typically, arguments against wind power have centered around noise and style. This is because wind turbines have always had a reputation for producing large amounts of noise but as wind turbine technology advances this noise is becoming a thing of the past. Style wise, what can I say? As with most things opinions are always divided but I think they look nice.

With renewable energy on many of our minds for both cost and environmental reasons it is perhaps of little surprise that it is growing in popularity. Wind turbines are and continue to be a part of an exciting growth industry that has no sign of deflating.
